A friendship forged in a kindergarten classroom in Hamburg 25 years ago has matured into a business partnership that’s keeping farmers working and people fed far beyond Berks County.

Travis LaFaver and Joey Jurgielwicz grew up together, and today, they both work at the Joe Jurgielewicz & Son Ltd. Pekin duck farm in Tilden Township. Joey is director of client services and Travis works in logistics while also running a beef farm nearby with his wife, Emily.

The LaFaver Family Farm sits off a winding road between Shartlesville and Hamburg, where Travis, 33, and Emily, 30, and their three daughters all pitch in to keep their small, onsite farm store humming, even during the COVID-19 crisis.

“Our farm store is really doing great,” Emily said Thursday. “We are honestly selling out of everything every week, but I would say our No. 1 sellers are chip steak and our burger patties.”
